47018 passes the site of Wantage Road station on a foggy 20 January 1979. Technically rather a poor picture due to the miserable lighting and (to a lesser extent) the use of a Praktica PLC2, but full of interest as it shows the very rare appearance of Stratford allocated steam heat 47 on the Great Western Mainline. Unfortunately I have been unable to identify the working, but my best guess is that it is a football special, which would explain the off region working if an East Anglia team was playing somewhere west. Any information would be gratefully received. Note that this is a long time before the relief lines were reinstated at this location and consequently the long disused platforms are still intact. |
