D6700 & 47851 Malago Vale 12 June 1999

Pioneer Class 37 D6700 NRM National Railway Museum was called upon to perform this most unusual working on Saturday 12 June 1999. The driver of the 1V26 23:30 (Friday) Manchester Piccadilly to Paignton Virgin CrossCountry service did not sign Class 47s (how could that possibly happen?), so D6700 was provided as a pilot locomotive south of Bristol. Consequently, the return 1S66 08:58 Paignton to Glasgow was also worked by the veteran type 3 as far as Bristol Temple Meads. It is pictured here just a short distance from the end of its historic run, passing the site of Malago Vale carriage sidings with train loco 47851 doing nothing but providing the train supply. Unfortunately the weather was grim and the limited depth of field when using a 200mm lens wide open on a Pentax 6x7 is readily apparent in this view.
